HISTORY OF THE GIG HARBOR NET SHEDS

Gig Harbor Net Sheds

Net sheds are the only surviving architectural connection between the Gig Harbor community and what was once one of the most successful fishing fleets on the west coast.

The first of Gig Harbor’s netsheds were constructed along the downtown waterfront beginning in 1910 for the local fishing fleet and their families. Used primarily to store nets and fishing gear, they were also a place where the fishermen and their families would gather after their fishing excursions as far away as the Arctic Sea. Today only 17 netsheds survive with 7 still being used commercially by roughly 30 fishing vessels. Gig Harbor Bay still has the largest inventory of historic netsheds on the Puget Sound.

In 2009 each of the netsheds was documented through a Historic Preservation Grant from the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP). The Skansie Brothers Netshed located in Skansie Park provides visitors with an upfront and close perspective of what life was like during the early years. For a more in depth look at each of the netsheds go to skansiebrothersnetshed.com. The Skansie Brothers Netshed is currently closed for repairs and will re-open in June 2025.

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: MILLVILLE IN GIG HARBOR

Millville Gig Harbor Neighborhood

Named after the Gig Harbor Sawmill and located on the west side of Gig Harbor Bay, the historic district of Millville in Gig Harbor, Washington was platted by Sam Jeresich, Joseph Dorotich and John and Josephine Novak and the Puratch family on June 28, 1888 and was the center of the town's Croatian fishing community. The area flourished around the sawmill and wharves, where schooners and steam freighters loaded lumber. Boat building and fishing along with the lumber industry were the main occupations.

Fun fact , Donkey Creek acquired its name from the steam "donkey engine" used for logging that area. In 1888, the Gig Harbor Mill Company was built at the end of the current Rosedale Street.

The original Millville had grocery stores, gas stations, and taverns. In 1923, the addition of a ferry landing  at the foot of Pioneer Way spurred new growth, including the Novak Hotel, the Peninsula Hotel, The Empress movie theater (later renamed the Roxy) and the First National Bank of Gig Harbor, established in 1927.

Today there are nearly 20 original historic homes still standing along Harborview Drive that are protected through City of Gig Harbor including the attached listing for sale at 3400 Harborview Drive.

The design phase will begin in 2025, with construction anticipated in 2026-27. This park is part of PenMet’s vision for an inclusive, nature-connected community space. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Get ready to transform your space in 2025 with paint color trends that invite warmth, depth, and bold personality into any room. According to Luxe.com, this year's palette highlights moody colors like rich blues, emerald greens, and deep charcoals, creating cozy, sophisticated backdrops that feel both luxurious and grounding. Earth tones are also big, with colors like terracotta, warm ochres, and soft browns bringing an organic, welcoming vibe that connects us to nature. For those who love to go bold, Luxe.com suggests not shying away from the impact of dark, dramatic shades or even a pop of unexpected color—vibrant pink or sherbet accents, retro teal tones, or rich jewel toned walls add an element of surprise and elegance. Whether you're looking to create a soothing sanctuary or a statement-making space, these trending colors will bring new life and personality to your home.
Condé Nast rounds up the world’s best private island resorts, perfect for those seeking a blend of luxury and exclusivity in paradise. Located on the southern tip of Gig Harbor, Point Fosdick was initially used as a ferry route from Titlow Beach in Tacoma starting in 1928. Initially called Highway 14, Point Fosdick Drive extended all the way to Gorst and on to Shelton WA. When Galloping Gertie was built, traffic shifted to what is now Hwy 16 which lasted barely 6 months before the bridge collapsed on Nov 7th 1940. The Ferry service was brought back until the Narrows Bridge could be re-built.

Pt Fosdick 2

GIG HARBOR SPORTS COMPLEX

The City of Gig Harbor & the YMCA are in the process of developing a new Sports Complex next to the existing YMCA, a project in motion since the City Council approved the purchase of land in December 2017. Over the past five years, the city has allocated $10.5 million through various funding sources to bring this complex to life. The city has also made significant strides in planning, securing funding, and maintaining the vision, with completed master planning, the engagement of engineers for further studies, and partnerships such as the lease agreement with the YMCA for two lit, synthetic turf fields under Phase 1A.

The Gig Harbor Sports Complex Phase 1B project is fully funded with $5.2 million included in the city's 2023-24 budget. Phase 1B will include restrooms, concession building, picnic shelters, event lawn, Bocce ball courts, pickle ball courts and additional parking.

Phase 2 & 3 are not funded yet but will include additional sporting fields. This ongoing commitment highlights the city's recognition of the importance of providing high-quality, lit synthetic fields for the community's youth, ensuring the project continues on schedule with proper funding, staffing, and partnerships in place.

GIG HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE

Did You Know Gig Harbor Lighthouse
Located at the entrance to the harbor and standing 15 feet tall, the lighthouse was built in 1988 at a cost of $30,000 with much of the costs donated by local companies. The Lighthouse replaced a singular flashing light to help commercial fisherman navigate the entrance safely. The funds to build the lighthouse were raised by inviting the public to purchase time capsules that would then be opened after 25 years. Everything from photos to predictions were placed in these time capsules and on June 28th, 2014, the capsules were opened by those who were designated to receive them and displayed for a while at Skansie Park. A new round of time capsules were then sold to the public and will be opened after 25 more years!

The Howard Coble Coast Guard and Marine Transportation Act of 2014, which passed Congress on December 11 of that year, included a provision transferring ownership of the property surrounding the lighthouse to the City of Gig Harbor which now stands as a marine park.

Gig Harbor Lighthouse is listed on the official Coast Guard Light List as a private aid to navigation that exhibits a red flash every four seconds.

Gig Harbor Market update May 2024

WHAT ARE RATES GOING TO DO IN 2024?

"This is the question everyone is asking. By all measures the economy should be slowing down and thus the federal reserve should be dropping rates. Why isn't this happening??? I have stayed consistent that in an election year things could get weird. There is incentive to show the economy is doing better than it is. Recent surveys to consumers and small business owners revealed that these groups are not optimistic about the state of the economy. However, reports would indicate it's one of the strongest economies in history. You tell me what you see and think? I think it's being prompted up and it's not doing that great. So how does this play into rates??? Rates will drop over the Fed's start dropping rates. Feds won't drop rates until the economic indicators show the economy slowing. Good bet is that rates will bounce up and down the rest of this year and after the elections we should see rates drop as I believe economic indicators will have less incentive to be manipulated.

At Nova bank we are buying forward commitments to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. We take on risk in doing this, but it produces lower rates for us to sell. At present we are looking to purchase another pool soon, which will give our clients an opportunity to get around the high interest environment! These pools of funds get allocated quickly so if you are interested, please reach out. We'd be happy to set up with this opportunity soon!!"

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: KOPACHUCK, WA

Kopachuck Gig Harbor WA

The name "Kopachuck" originated from "Chinook Jargon", the trade language of the Pacific Coastal Indians and is a merging of two words - "Kopa" meaning "at" and "chuck" meaning "water". The Puyallup and Nisqually tribes used this area long ago for seasonal fishing and clamming.

The Kopachuck neighborhood is located about 12-15 minutes from downtown Gig Harbor. It is characterized by well-kept neighborhoods and homes in a clean and friendly environment, along with many views of the water. It is recognized for its good schools - Voyager Elementary and Kopachuck Middle School.

Kopachuck Park is a 280 acre day-use park with an amazing 5600 ft. of western exposure shoreline on Carr Inlet. It has scenic views of sunsets, panoramic views of the snow-capped Olympic Mountains and the sound along with the overwhelming beauty of the outdoors.

The most popular day-use area of the park is the sandy beach. Getting there requires a short 1/8-mile walk down the hill. During low tide, the sun warms the sand, which in turn warms the water brought in by the tide. You'll see families their kids splashing and swimming in the water in the summer, collecting sand dollars and other shellfish, building sand castles and exploring the marine habitat. There are oysters and some other shellfish on the beach, but there is no harvesting until next year (2025) because of the construction ongoing at the park.

This beautiful park has an upper wooded area with picnic shelters and tables and over two miles of hiking trails. There are changes happening right now in the works. The upper park plan will feature a welcome center and a lodge-like multipurpose building. Plans also call for a ADA-compliant picnic area, amphitheater, play area, parking and restrooms. Along the beach, plans include an ADA-compliant walkway, stairs, non-motorized boat launching and water trail camping.

Cutts Island, or "Deadman's Island" and many locals call it, is part of the park, just 1/2 mile away and accessible only by boat. In the summer, it is often a popular meeting-up place for boaters and has also hosted volleyball tournaments. It is also a great destination for kayaking, canoeing or boat tours, and is popular for diving, hiking & exploring the surrounding waters. This little 2-acre island has had many names throughout the years, including "Crow Island" for the large quantity of crows that Peter Puget, an explorer, discovered in 1792 and later "Scotts Island" in honor of Thomas Scott, quartermaster of the 1874 Wilkes expedition.

Kopachuck Gig Harbor WA 2
Nestled in the serene beauty of the Kopachuck area, on the enchanting Raft Island, lies a truly captivating waterfront home that recently found its fortunate owner. This exquisite property embodies the epitome of waterfront living, offering panoramic views of the shimmering Puget Sound that stretch as far as the eye can see.

In March, the real estate market witnessed a slight uptick in both active listings and pending homes, heralding a notable shift in market dynamics. With more properties hitting the market and a surge in pending sales, our monthly supply soared to 2.32 months, signaling the further transition into a seller's market. NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: RAFT ISLAND

Raft Island neighborhood spotlight 1
Initially named Allshouse by Captain Wilkes in 1841, the name Raft Island was given since those at the time thought it looked like a "raft floating on the water".

The whole island was purchased back in 1928 by a Californian by the name of George O. Noble, a wealthy mining engineer, who had planned a personal estate with "a private wharf, stables for riding horses, roads, trails and terrace landscaping," the newspaper said. George actually had a 788 foot wood bridge built to access the island from the mainland. This aging bridge was replaced with a new bridge fairly recently in 2014.
2Raft Island neighborhood spotlight 1
Located just 5.5 miles from the city of Gig Harbor, Raft Island is roughly 160 acres in size (at high tide) and surrounded by the mainland with views to the west of the Olympic Mountains and Cutts Island to the south. With its protected location, this is a fun island to kayak and paddleboard around. The water is warm (relatively) in the close-by inlets, which makes it a good place to boat, ski and swim. There are two neighborhood stores, each within 2-5 minutes from the bridge on the mainland.

There are roughly 200 homes total on the island. Those who own homes on the island become members of the Raft Island Improvement Association (RIIA) and have access to 2 community beaches. One is on the south end next to the bridge and includes a boat launch, dock, kayak racks and picnic tables. The second park is on the north end of the island facing the Olympic Mountains. There are also tennis courts in the middle of the island that are currently being rebuilt and improved.
Raft Island neighborhood spotlight 3
This stunning waterfront home was recently listed on Raft Island. With breathtaking views, thoughtful updates, and possibly the longest dock with deep water moorage in all of Gig Harbor, it is no wonder it went under contract in just a week!

Take a tour around the island and see what it's all about. You may fall in love with it!

MOSQUITO FLEET

Mosquito Fleet
Long before road systems were introduced in Western Washington, the only option for reaching Gig Harbor and other towns along the waterways was by way of the Mosquito Fleet steamships. Starting in 1836, this fleet of ships carrying passengers and freight ran all along the Puget Sound and nearby waterways and rivers stopping at every waterfront dock.
Mosquito Fleet Gig Harbor wa
By the late 1920s, automobiles and highways were the preferred method of transportation. A new Tacoma Narrows bridge was built, which from our last article did not survive, and was named "Galloping Gertie." Between the time when Galloping Gertie collapsed and when the second bridge was completed, a state-run ferry service delivered drivers directly into downtown Gig Harbor. Remains of the ferry dock can still be seen just outside the mouth of the harbor at the southeast end of Harborview Drive.

The only two Mosquito Fleet vessels still in existence are the Virginia V, now listed on the National Register of Historical Places docked in South Lake Union, and the Carlisle II, a passenger-only ferry built in 1917 which still runs between Bremerton and Port Orchard.
Mosquito Fleet of South Puget Sound
For more in-depth information, try "Mosquito Fleet of South Puget Sound (Images of America)", a great book by Jean Findlay and Robin Paterson.

NARROWS BRIDGE HISTORY

Maria Kalafatich Luxury Real Estate
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, also known as "Galloping Gertie," was an engineering marvel that spanned the Tacoma Narrows strait. Opening in 1940, it gained infamy for its dramatic oscillations in windy conditions, which eventually led to its collapse just months later. The bridge's failure became a pivotal moment in engineering history, prompting a reevaluation of design principles and aerodynamics.

Decades later, the documentary "700 Feet Down" revisited this tragic event, delving into the bridge's construction, its spectacular demise, and the lessons learned from this engineering catastrophe. Through archival footage, expert analysis, and personal accounts, the film sheds light on the human and technical factors behind one of the most iconic failures in structural engineering, offering valuable insights into the pursuit of safer and more resilient infrastructure. More Telecommuters Might Want to Move to the Harbor

An interesting article came across my path from the Seattle PI.

“Zillow” found that 75% of Americans working from home due to COVID-19 would prefer to telecommute at least half of the time once the pandemic subsides, and 66% said they would consider moving if their job allowed them to continue telecommuting.”

This means if you are debating moving or downsizing, this may be the time!

Many of my clients live in the Washington State Peninsula. Our homes will be in top demand if more Seattleites or Bellevue dwellers decide to step away from the rat-race. They can buy a better, bigger home in Gig Harbor or Ollala and still be a ferry ride away from the city.

This was the quote that made my heart skip a beat: “Moving away from the central core has traditionally offered affordability at the cost of your time and gas money. Relaxing those costs by working remotely could mean more households choose those larger homes farther out, easing price pressure on urban and inner suburban areas,” said Zillow senior principal economist, Skylar Olsen.

Did you read that? LARGER HOMES FURTHER OUT?? That means our neck-of-the-woods may be store for a buyer boom.

And here is what I believe will be a big deciding factor: “More people will leave San Francisco, New York, and even Seattle, some for nearby towns like Sacramento and Tacoma that are close enough to support a weekly office visit.” Think about this… yes many may move south to Pierce County, but Tacoma isn’t that different from Seattle.

Gig Harbor though…that is another planet. A stunning, green, quiet heavenly planet. So while they may start looking in Tacoma, the traffic and rat-race mentality will eventually lead them to our paradise.

And if you are selling, get ready for a prime opportunity.

When people realize that their future commute might include a monthly Ferry Ride and taxi drive, they will start salivating at the possibilities that the Peninsula offers.

And that might make some sellers salivate at their options.

Call me, and we can talk about strategy! This may or may not be for you…but if you don’t call, you’ll never know.
